Getting started can at first appear difficult, but it’s rather easy. Here are some quick tips to get you started.

Introduction

The first thing that happens when you connect is you are put into the lobby. When speaking of the lobby, usually we are speaking of a huge mess with a bunch of people playing random notes or 7 bots playing a lot of songs at once. The chat is often being spammed by long and stupid usernames. Along the top of the screen are the player bubbles which, upon being clicked on, will give you different options about each player. If you click on yourself, you can set your own username or nickname. If you click on other players, you’ll see a few options: «Mute Notes», «Mute Chat», and «Mute Completely.» You can choose these options to prevent annoying players from clogging up your experience.

Along the bottom of your screen, you’ll notice a drop-up menu (as opposed to a drop-down menu), a few buttons, and the number of people playing. To the right you’ll see a volume knob. We’ll go through each of these features now, excluding the obvious ones.

Rooms

Multiplayer Piano has different rooms which are different groups of players identified by a name. These rooms have tons of options to customize your experience, but before you go creating one, see if there’s another room that might interest you. Click on the drop-up menu and you’ll see a multitude of rooms that people have created. Here is the best place to get away from the chaos and make some new friends.

If you’re dedicated to hiding from everyone, you can either create a «New Room» manually or use the «Play Alone» button. When using the play alone button, there is no previous setup required, you just hit the button and off you go! The room is automatically configured to not allow anyone else to enter. If you use the new room button, you are first presented to enter the name of your room and whether or not you want it to be visible. Then, hit «go» and your room has been created!

Once you’ve made a room, you may have noticed an extra button appear on that bottom bar: «Room Settings.» Here you can configure different aspects about your room.

Room Settings

The first thing you’ll see is a button that says «Drop Crown.» The person who owns the room is the one with the crown symbol on their player bubble, and they are the one who controls the settings and also moderates the room. If you hit the drop crown button, you’ll drop your crown onto the piano for anyone to pick up, allowing others to own your room instead.

The following options are fairly self-explanatory, such as the «Visible» option (which disables or enables visibility of your room in the dropdown), the «Enable Chat» option (which enables or disables chat), and the «Only Owner can Play» option (which only allows you, the owner, to play the piano). One nice thing about using the «Enable Chat» option is that you can still send your link to other people to join. This creates kind of like an «invite-only» room. Fun fact: you can also send the link for the «Play Alone» room you created for a similar feature.

Finally, there’s the background color. Can you guess what this feature does? We’ll let you experiment with it to see!

Room Moderation

To moderate your room is fairly simple. When a player joins, if you want them to leave you have a few options. Clicking on their player bubble now reveals an option to kickban. Here you can determine how long you want to ban the player from your room. And. that’s it, it’s as simple as that!

Other Features

Octave Tweaking

To switch between octaves while playing the piano, you can use the following keys: shift to raise an octave and alt to drop an octave. Alternatively, you can also use ctrl and caps lock to drop octaves, but this is not recommended since some browsers have many keyboard shortcuts for these and may conflict.

You can also switch octaves by using the arrow keys. This time, instead of having to hold the key, your octave change will be remembered.

Sustain (hey, that’s me!)

Easter Eggs

Due to an overwhelming amount of abusive players, a lot of the classic MPP easter eggs have since been removed. However, if you discover any new ones, feel free to add them to the list below!

Your Own Lobby

Did you know you can create your own lobby? While people won’t be added to it automatically (that’s reserved for «lobby»), any room you create with either «test/» or «lobby» at the beginning of it will be registered as a lobby. Cool, eh? This makes no difference to the functionality of the room, however.

Spinning Piano

If you’re prepared to have a seizure, including the word «spin» anywhere in your room name to make the piano spin like hell! Look at it go! Round and round and round and. ohh I’m getting dizzy.

One-Note Only Please

If you change the end of your room in the URL to contain #test at the end, only one note of the piano will load. I wonder how many songs you can create with that? Combining this with the spinning piano makes a wonderful circling spaceship. Or pong paddle. Whatever floats your fancy.

Self-Vision

Look ma, I can see myself! Add #seeowncursor at the end of any MPP URL to see your own cursor!

Piano Great and Soft

Back in the classic days of MPP, you had to change your piano sounds using special tags in the URL. One of these sounds was a wonderful one called «Piano Great And Soft.» Unfortunately, it was never re-added, but don’t fret, Sustain is here! Creating your room

Upon clicking the tab named New Room, a player can create their room and invite participants to make a collaboration with them.В On clicking the tab, it opens a dialogue box which comes with a tab to give a name to the room and comes with a check box stating visible to everyone. Enabling this check box makes it visible to everyone. If you want to invite selected participants, uncheck the box. A message will be flashing at the top of the screen encouraging the owner to invite friends by sharing the link.

After creating the room, a new tab named Room settings appears at the bottom, on clicking it a dialogue box opens containing the following options:

Drop Crown

Enabling this, removes you as the owner of the room, and makes someone else the owner, who can adjust the room settings as desired.

Visible to everyone

This is a similar option as that in the checkbox.В

Enable Chat

Using this checkbox beside the option “Enable chat”, the owner can allow or deny the players presents in the room to chat among themselves.В

Only owner can play

This function only allows the player to play.

Inner and outer Color

This option allows the owner to choose the desired background color for the screen.

Player Limit

This option puts a restriction on the numbers of players allowed to join the room. The number indicated in the space beside the option implies the maximum number of players that can join the room. Once that many players have joined, the rooms prevent from admitting any players further.В

Another special power that the owner of the room has, is to kick ban a player. At the top of the tab displaying the player’s name, there is an option named “Kick ban”.В This comes with a time limit spanning from zero to sixty minutes. This represents the duration for which the particular player is banned from joining the room.В В

Record mp3

Clicking on this option starts recording the tune being played on the virtual piano. A block of messages stating «recording MP3» appears on the top of the screen.В Once the recording is done, click on the button below which states stop recording.

Synth

On clicking on the option Synth, the dialogue box Synthesize opens. It can be accessed through the ON/OFF toggle buttons. This acts as an interface that enables the player to change the appearance and the quality of sound in the mini keyboard online. This is also handy for sound mixing.

Client Settings

Among other tabs present below, client settings are one of them. On clicking upon the tab, a drop-down list appears. The list consists of options like:

Getting started with Multiplayer piano may be easy, but there is a lot beneath the surface that you can uncover. Here are some quick tips to get you started.

Lobbies

Main Lobby

When we speak about the main lobby, usually we are speaking of a huge mess that has a bunch of people playing random notes, or 7 bots playing alot of songs at once. Also, the chat may be spammed by long and stupid usernames. This can be annoying, so go ahead and mute the people who do this. When clicking on the players bubble at the top of the screen, click what you would like to mute. Clicking «Mute Notes» will mute the players notes for you *please note this only works for clients, not for everyone else*. Clicking «Mute Chat» will mute the players chat, and finally clicking on «Mute Completely» will cut all connection between you and them (both notes and chat)

Your Own Room

The first thing to learn when it comes to this Multiplayer Piano is that it has different rooms you can join. These rooms have many options that you can configure, explained below.

There are four buttons, a drop-down box, and a slider on the bar at the bottom. The drop-down box (if your new/just joined) will say «lobby» or «lobby2». The four buttons will say «New Room. «, «Play Alone», «Midi», and «Room Settings» (only shows when owner of a room). First we will talk about the «New Room. » button.

The new room is where you can create a lobby, and there you have a box to type in and a check box. The check box lets you choose if it visible for everyone to see, or for only the people you invite. The type box is where you can name your room. You can name it anything as long as it is under 512 characters.

Once you have made your lobby, now you can use the Room Settings button. In the Room Settings button, there are three check boxes and one button. If you click on the button that says «Drop Crown», it will remove you as the owner from the room, and drop a little animated crown in front of the piano. Anybody can click the crown and become the owner of the room. If nobody clicks it, it will be returned to you. The first check box says the same as when you were creating the room. You can choose to make it either Invisible or Visible to people who open the drop-up box. The second check box is kind of self explanatory. It says «Enable Chat». The third and final check box says «Only Owner can Play». This one is also self explanatory.

In a recent update, they allowed you to change the background color of the room. When you go into the «Room Settings. » button, there should be a little white box. Click on the box, and select any color that you want. You can also define the color using RBG colors. Also in the recent update, you are able to connect Midi’s to the website. We will talk more about that later.

Now you may be wondering what the «Play Alone» button means. Well, your probably not. But, the play alone buttons means you will basically create a new room with the not visible button selected. When the not visible button is selected, you can still invite friends using the link.

Chatting

The chat in a lobby does not have many options, but it may be just as crazy. The chat in lobbies can be spammed, and annoyed. I have explained how to mute the chat before, but chatting is not just bad. The chat holds up to 200 lines of text before deleting it. To see the text, click (or press enter) on the chat and scroll up. This will show you everything that people have said up to 200 lines. If you are the owner of a room, you can see up to 300 lines.

Hotkeys

Need some quick thinking or just some extra pizazz? Here are some hotkeys to get you up and running!

Octave Tweaking

It is also possible by pressing your keyboard arrows, to change the octave higher than the shift and control key. What this does is it basically is like moving your notes to the higher or lower part of the piano, instead of it all being in the middle.

Sustaining your Notes

If you press Backspace on this website, it will stop the notes from being sustained. Also, if you happen to have the sustain off, you can use the Space Bar as the sustain pedal, where holding it will sustain all notes you play, and releasing it will release the sustaining effect. Most people do not know about this, but it is very handy.

Use your keyboard

Easter Eggs

Multiplayer Piano has two known Easter Eggs associated with it as of November 1, 2015.

Spin Room

The Spin Room is a room in which the piano constantly rotates. To activate this Easter Egg, enter or create a room labeled «/spin«.

Lobby Backdoor

A way to get in the «lobby» room in case of clicking the lobby room in the «Rooms» tab does not work. The link to it is «www.multiplayerpiano.com/lolwutsecretlobbybackdoor»

Hashtags

Like changing sounds, if you add #Test to the end of the web address of any room, only one note will load. This is used to test the notes and make sure they work.

#SeeOwnCursor

If you add #SeeOwnCursor to your address bar, you will see what your cursor looks like to other people. This can be a lot of fun to play around with.

#MidiOut

You can also write #MidiOut at the end of your address bar to see that your notes will be repeated once. Basically, this tells you when the other people hear your key.

A MIDI is basically the way to allow your computer to connect to Multiplayerpiano.com. To enable midi, you just need to connect your piano to your PC. Most newer piano’s have a USB slot. Older piano’s have Midi plugs. MIDI cables are bought in popular stores and websites including amazon.com and ebay.com.

Auto Players

Regular Bots

One of the most things that happen on the piano nowadays is «Bots» or «Auto Players.» There are many different terms, such as «MPP Midi Players», «Bots», «NMPBs», and many more. These are unavoidable, but the best thing to do when encountering them is to mute them. Sometimes the bots will be actual people though, controlling it. Sometimes they will be nice, and you can just ask them to leave. Using a bot is one of the worst things you can do on the Multiplayer Piano, but it is very common. They are nothing to be afraid of though, and some are really nice.

NMPBs

NMPBs are users of the Nameless Multiplayer Piano Bot, or a bot that was made for players to upload MIDIs (music files) to the bot to play back to the lobby. They can be found by looking for rooms that say «NMPB» before the room’s name usually. They can’t be found in a room that doesn’t have that in front of the room to prevent trolling.

There are also bots that can be played in lobbies, but they do not have any chat interaction at all. These bots are usually annoying, but they an be avoided by muting people.

How to use the sounds

It is simple, really. Go to the URL of the website, then at the end, add the sound of your choice above. You must add the # or it won’t work

If you are in a room, where the URL is like this: /exampleroom, do NOT do this: /exampleroom/#newpiano. Instead, do this to make it work: /exampleroom#newpiano Also note that the sounds are not case sensitive, so you don’t have to add capitalization. Our personal favorite it #Piano_Great_and_Soft, but they’re all fun.
